Choosing a Character's Race
Choosing a race is a very important step in the creation of your character. You should give great thought to how you envision your character will live his or her life. Will he lead an ultimately good and pure life or will he succumb to the base desires of the dark and the corrupted? Or will he keep a careful eye on all his actions and strive to lead a life that balances the good and the evil?

Based on how you envision your character will lead his or her life, your race will become an important part of this decision. Some races are inherently evil while others are inherently good. To sway from the predisposed alignment of these particular races will have dire consequences in the end. It is in your best interest to pick a race that closely, if not perfectly, matches the alignment you have in mind for your character. Playing a child murdering elf will raise the ire of the Gods of Light and will most likely result in something nasty since elves are inherently good natured and care for all life. However, if you play a child murdering troll, than you will have nothing to fear since your murderous ways are in step with the evil nature of trolls.

The following is a list of the races that Dark Mists offers:

Arborian: Good, humanoid plant life, pro-nature, mentally acute
Centaur: Good aligned half-man, half-beast
Changeling: Masters of shape-shifting, elusive
Dark-elf: Evil minded elves excelled in deception
Draconian: Dragon-like humanoids, durable and intelligent, either good or evil
Dwarf: Short, stout, and noisy with lots of stamina, often grumpy
Elf: Sneaky and lithe, magical in nature
Giant: Large, strong, and clumsy followers of balance
Gnome: Small, tough, and aged tinkers
Grey-elf: Very wise elves with an eye to balance in the world and their lives
Griffon: Good aligned, half-lion, half-eagle.
Halfling: About half the height of humans, merry thieves and pranksters
Human: Average proportions of abilities and characteristics
Illithid: Evil, unisex and squid-faced, mentally powerful
Minotaur: Big bullheaded humanoids, ferocious fighters, very spiritual
Troll: Big evil brutes that regenerate from wounds

Different races have different starting statistics, and also different stat maximums for magic items and training.

For more information, see the help files for each race (i.e. 'help dwarf').

One more thing of particular note. There is a special lottery system that is built into the game. If you happen to log on one day and find you have received a note from Riallus saying you have won, then you will have found yourself in a unique position. The bearer of the lottery ticket is given the rare opportunity to create a unique character. A character that breaks the mold in that the character can be of any alignment and can join any guild it wishes. These are rare, for good reason. So keep your eyes peeled and good luck!
